Biography

Nicol Boyd is a product designer currently based in Taipei, Taiwan from where he runs his studio, Office for Product Design.

He was born in 1976 in Glasgow, Scotland, and began his training in design at the Glasgow School of Art. After completing his undergraduate degree in 1999 he moved to Italy to work for Alessi, where he developed products for among others Achille Castiglioni, Alessandro Mendini, Alberto Meda and Michael Graves. He returned to the UK to continue his design studies at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2004. The following years saw him working at IDEO, first as a resident in their San Francisco and Palo Alto offices, and later with the Munich and London offices. He also spent a brief period at Nokia’s design department in London, before establishing himself as a freelance designer with international clients. He co-founded Office for Product Design in Hong Kong in 2007 together with RCA classmate Tomas Rosén. In 2020 he also co-founded OOO, a self production platform which explores the wider context of the objects they design and produce. Since 2022 he has run Office for Product Design as his personal design practice.

His work and experience spans a wide range of product sectors, including homeware, consumer electronics increasingly furniture and lighting and is characterised by a search for simplicity, economy of form and contextual relevance.

His work has been widely publicised and recognised with leading international design awards, including iF Gold Award, Good Design Award (G-Mark), Red Dot, German Design Award, Design Plus and Design for Asia Award.
